Thors comment:

""This "Nanban" style pot is especially suitable for bunjin/literati style trees. It doesn't have to be the classic pine, it can also be a blooming cherry, a weeping wisteria, or a large-leaved ginko? In literati, you don't have to take into account the thickness of the trunk and the branches, but here it is the movement that is more important, so even young trees do very well in this kind of low pot."

THOR ABOUT THE EDITION - "Nanban"

"I have had Nanban explained to me in Japan that it means something like: "That which comes over the sea." Implied: "Rough and primitive from foreign land." (In bonsai circles synonymous with jar lids from Korea which are considered particularly suitable for the literati/bunjin style) The fact that I named this edition Nanban is because the inspiration comes precisely from these simple jar lids, which for me symbolize the experience and skill of the craftsman, who without spending time on details and beauty, puts the focus primarily on function. For me it means that there is no overthinking in nanban, it is the brush stroke of the moment. It is also the case that, now that I have had exhibitions in Japan for the first time, I have received the comment that my pots have a primitive brutal Nordic style in Japanese eyes, they are considered precisely "nanban."
